{"id":29,"date":"2010-05-10T08:23:52","date_gmt":"2010-05-10T13:23:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/weinshenker.net\/blog\/?p=29"},"modified":"2010-08-21T23:42:25","modified_gmt":"2010-08-22T04:42:25","slug":"oracle-support-on-vmware","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/weinshenker.net\/blog\/2010\/05\/10\/oracle-support-on-vmware\/","title":{"rendered":"Oracle Support on VMware \u2013 your Cisco switches and DELL servers aren\u2019t certified with Oracle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So I came across <a href=\"http:\/\/searchservervirtualization.techtarget.com\/news\/article\/0,289142,sid94_gci1511362,00.html\">this<\/a> article last week on Oracle VM and how companies are trying it and how it&#8217;s, and I&#8217;m quoting here &#8220;not half bad&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>If I ever come out with my own Enterprise level software and have a couple of public releases under my belt and the best thing I can get in the press is &#8220;not half bad&#8221;, shoot me.\u00a0 Seriously.\u00a0 That&#8217;s embarrassing.\u00a0 Even if you do offer it for free.<\/p>\n<p>So let&#8217;s look past the headline and see what the article has to say, shall we?<\/p>\n<p>First sentence &#8220;Oracle&#8217;s continued refusal to support its applications virtualized on  something other than the Oracle VM hypervisor has forced the hands of  some users, pushing them to try the Xen-based virtualization offering.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s this sort of FUD (Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt) spreading that&#8217;s one of the things I dislike about our industry.\u00a0 Let me be completely clear <strong>ORACLE FULLY SUPPORTS ITS APPLICATIONS VIRTUALIZED ON SOMETHING OTHER THAN ORACLE VM HYPERVISOR<\/strong>.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t believe me?\u00a0 Check out <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">Metalink<\/span> My Oracle Support note 249212.1 &#8211; Support Position for Oracle Products Running on VMWare Virtualized Environments. Here&#8217;s the first paragraph<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Oracle has not certified any of its products on VMware virtualized<br \/>\nenvironments. Oracle Support will assist customers running Oracle products<br \/>\non VMware in the following manner: Oracle will only provide<br \/>\nsupport for issues that either are known to occur on the native OS, or<br \/>\ncan be demonstrated not to be as a result of running on VMware.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Did you know <strong>your Cisco switches aren&#8217;t certified by Oracle<\/strong>?\u00a0 <strong>Your DELL servers aren&#8217;t certified by Oracle either<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Very very rarely does Oracle certify another vendor&#8217;s hardware products.\u00a0 Certify != support.\u00a0 Oracle support&#8217;s your installation of Oracle productions on VMware just fine.\u00a0 They take the very reasonable point of view that they&#8217;ll help you until they come to believe the issue is VMware at which point they&#8217;ll refer you to VMware support.\u00a0 Seems completely rational to me.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been an Oracle Apps DBA running Oracle products under VMware for about 4 years.\u00a0 I have <strong>never<\/strong> had Oracle not help me because I run many of my environments under VMware. I&#8217;ve spoken with numerous other Oracle DBAs running Oracle products under VMware.\u00a0 None of us have ever had an issue where Oracle wouldn&#8217;t support our environments because we were running under VMware.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll address the rest of the article in another blog post shortly, but seeing this FUD still slung about makes me too annoyed to write coherently.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Did you know your Cisco switches aren&#8217;t certified by Oracle?
